Newsflash

Solar Energy:

Since March 2012 Green Care Association (GCA) has been developing low cost technology using solar energy. The need arose due to the high costs associated with burning firewood, which GCA previously used to create bee wax, and the time needed to tend to the fires. Throughout the following 6 months, GCA, produced different affordable solutions and developed very effective methods to capture sunlight and turn it into heat. Using combinations of cardboard and aluminium foil, mirrors and wood, clear plastic and glass GCA have successfully created technology which not only fulfils their initial aims, but has also captured the interest of charities, organisations and the local community. Local people are now requesting solar dryers and solar cookers from GCA, having seen the benefits of cooking without the prohibitive cost of burning firewood. GCA are continuing with research and prototypes and are seeing a great interest from the community in Shisong and beyond.

New Training Center:

Since April 2012, GCA have been developing a site, next to their existing tree nursery, with the aim of building an Agroforestry and Environmental Training Centre. This will help GCA to expand their reach as an organisation to communities across a wider area. With the help of volunteers and community workers, the training centre was designed as a 7 room building and received Kumbo Council approval in May 2012. The construction of the foundation was completed in July 2012, and funding is being raised to complete the rest of the structure. In time GCA will move to the new premises and will be able to develop their initiatives to help the surrounding communities. It is hoped these initiatives will include:

  • A demonstration area for holding frequent community workshops

  • Solar drying and cooking

  • Pasture Improvement

  • Recycling animal waste for composting

  • Rapid Yam Set Multiplications

  • Sustainable Bee Keeping, including Honey drink and production of bee wax, Candles and shoe polish as income generating activities

  • Brooding techniques for Chicken, Pig, fish and other non- conventional livestock farming

It is involved in environmental education, poverty alleviation and sustainable use of local resources. Our mission is to empower local communities with techniques of sustainable use of local resources and building networking opportunities across the world, with an overriding commitment to education, poverty alleviation and community development.

In addition, Green Care runs a Development and Environmental Library (DEL) and just introduced some exciting new programs like the Bird Watching and Trekking/Mountaineering - all these to encourage communities to better appreciate their environment and promote tourism at local communities.

Some of our major sponsors and partners include: The British Trust For Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), The Instititute of Development Studies (IDS), The America Peace Corps Volunteers, The Center for Conservation Agriculture (CEPROCA), The Cnetr for Eru Propagation (CENDEP), The Bui Cane Rat Farmers (BUCARAF), L'Institute Des Recherches Agronomique (IRA) Bambui, The Netherlands Embassy Yaounde, Berinyuy Women Development Cooperative Society Ltd (BERWODECOOP), Kumbo Divisional Delegation of Environment and Nature Protection, The World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) and The Community Eudcation and Action Center (CEAC), Sob etc.st 18

Among the many of GC's achievements are; The 2008 Green Hero's Award from The BTCV, A 1998 two-weeks Bee Keeping Training Workshop in Sob sponsored by The Netherlands Embassy in Yaounde-Cameroon, The 1995 participation at Earthwatch Bird Research Program in Northern Italy, The establishment of DEL in 1999, The designation by the Kumbo Divisional Delegation of Environment of GC as The Leading Environmental Organization in Bui and the participation by GC at the Workshop on Better Science Reporting in Ibadan-Nigeria organized by WRENmedia.

Founded in 1994 in Limbe, Cameroon, Green Care moved to Kumbo (Nso, Bui Division) in 1998. The move was prompted by the realization that most of GC's activities would be more successful in Kumbo, where community development initiatives are an integral part of the Nso traditional values. And as a cost-cutting measure the office of GC was moved from downtown Kumbo to Shisong.
